Career achievement awards for six faculty members—Chris Muran (pictured), Jacques Barber, Kirkland Vaughans, Robert Bornstein, Mark Hilsenroth and Lea Theodore—reflect the Derner School’s impact on psychoanalytic thought.
Research at Derner School of Psychology
Research is central to Derner’s identity as an empirically informed school of psychology.
It has been that way since the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology was founded in 1972 as the first university-based school of psychology in the United States. Our faculty has long distinguished itself for its contributions to the field as well as for its commitment to inspiring students and preparing them to join the ranks of researchers.
Research Highlights
Rethinking Adult Social Relationships
Associate Dean Katherine Fiori, PhD, Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, talks about her research, aimed at understanding how adults can best “lead a happy, healthy life.” They need not just close family ties, she said, but also so-called “weak ties” that present stimulation and “novel opportunities” for social interaction.
Recent works by faculty members Robert Mendelsohn, Joel Weinberger, Jairo N. Fuertes, Jacques Barber and J. Christopher Muran burnish the Derner School’s reputation as a world leader in psychoanalytic research.
An article by Kirkland Vaughans, PhD ’85, clinical director of the Derner Hempstead Child Clinic, explains how traditional psychotherapy misses the impact of structural racism on Black boys’ psyches—and suggests what to do about it.
