Tuition Remission
Adelphi University offers generous tuition remission benefits for employees, their spouses, and dependent children, providing opportunities to take courses, earn certificates, or obtain degrees.
Who is Eligible for Tuition Remission?
- You—all active working nonunion staff or faculty members.
- Your spouse
- Your dependent child(ren)
If you are a union-represented employee, you are eligible to the extent indicated in the appropriate provisions of the collective bargaining agreements.
How to Apply for Tuition Remission
To apply for tuition remission, log in to eCampus and go to the My Benefits service. From there, select “Submit Tuition Remission” to complete the authorization form:
- Indicate the semester (Fall or Spring). Intersession classes are submitted as Spring semester. For Summer, specify the session
- Choose the student (self, spouse, or dependent children)
- Confirm if the student has a Bachelor’s degree (dependent children must not have one)
- Non-faculty employees: Indicate if courses meet during work hours (requires written approval from your supervisor and Human Resources)
- Ensure all information is complete and accurate, then submit before the semester’s course drop deadline. See the academic calendar for that specific date.
Apply for Financial Aid
Employees of Adelphi University and their spouses and/or dependents who are seeking tuition remission for undergraduate coursework are required to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year. Adelphi’s federal school code is 002666.
Tuition remission will not be processed until the valid FAFSA has been received and processed.
Nonunion Employee Information
Nonunion employees, after one year of employment, can apply for tuition remission for dependent children for undergraduate courses. Tuition Remission cannot be used for an independent study.
Full-time employees can receive tuition remission benefits for themselves, their spouses, and dependent children:
- Two undergraduate or two graduate courses per semester for the employee
- Spouses are eligible for two undergraduate or three graduate courses each semester
- Dependent children are eligible for full undergraduate tuition remission for their first bachelor’s degree
Part-time nonunion staff and Head Coaches can receive tuition remission benefits for themselves, their spouses, and dependent children:
- One undergraduate or one graduate course each semester
- Spouses are eligible for one undergraduate or one graduate course each semester
- Dependent children are eligible for up to two undergraduate courses, if the employee or spouse is not taking any
Assistant coaches are eligible for a maximum of four courses per academic year with no more than two courses per semester.
Faculty Information
All fees, including laboratory fees, books and/or any other costs associated with attending classes under the tuition remission program are the responsibility of the faculty member and eligible dependents. All University fees must be paid in full by all tuition remission recipients in order for tuition remission benefits to continue for the faculty member’s eligible dependents. Tuition Remission cannot be used for an independent study.
- Full-time faculty members may take two graduate courses per semester immediately following the date of appointment at full tuition remission.
- Spouses are eligible to take two undergraduate or three graduate courses each semester, at 100% tuition remission.
- Dependent children of full-time faculty members are eligible for 100% undergraduate tuition remission for their first baccalaureate degree.
- Faculty may not take nor receive tuition remission for courses that they are teaching.
Auditing Courses:
With the approval of the instructor, full-time faculty members shall be permitted to audit any and all undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the University. Time spent in auditing courses shall not be considered part of full-time faculty members’ required workweek.
Adjunct Faculty:
- Regular adjunct faculty, their spouse or their dependent children, are eligible for half tuition remission for each course taught, up to a maximum of one course each semester.
- Only one family member may use tuition remission each semester.
- Faculty may not take nor receive tuition remission for courses that they are teaching.
Senior Adjunct Faculty:
- Senior Adjunct Faculty are eligible for one course each semester.
- Spouses and dependent children of senior adjunct faculty are eligible for half tuition remission for each course taught, up to a maximum of one course each semester.
- Only one family member may use tuition remission each semester.
- Faculty may not take nor receive tuition remission for courses that they are teaching.
The children of deceased or totally and permanently disabled tenured full-time faculty and children of tenured full-time faculty who retired after having served ten (10) years or more shall be entitled to all tuition remission benefits available to the children of active full-time faculty.
Additional Requirements and Special Considerations
Dependent Children Aged 24 and Older
In order for an employee’s dependent child who is age 24 or older to prove dependency for tuition remission purposes:
- The child must not have a bachelor’s degree.
- The child must reside with one of the parents during all of the semester(s) they receive tuition remission (unless they live on Adelphi’s campus).
- The employee must provide proof that the child is being claimed on one of the parent’s most recently filed tax returns.
- Proof of residence and tax dependency must be provided to the Office of Human Resources before the semester in which the child turns 24 and yearly thereafter.
If an employee’s child, aged 24 or older, is currently receiving tuition remission, but can’t prove dependency or residency, they’ll lose the tuition remission starting next Fall. If they’re already receiving tuition remission and can prove dependency and residency, the employee must provide written proof to Human Resources before the next Fall semester begins.
Study Abroad
Tuition remission for study abroad covers:
- Any Adelphi faculty-led intersession courses which occurs in Intersession when the student is registered for an Adelphi course.
- As well as Exchange Program schools in the fall and spring semesters.
Tuition remission for study abroad does not cover:
- Study abroad or exchange programs which occur during the summer sessions.
- Program fees;
- Study abroad programs at host institutions during any semester, study abroad during the fall and spring semester with provider institutions (non-exchange programs).
Employment Termination
If you should terminate your employment for any reason (except layoff) from Adelphi during a semester (or cycle) in which you, your spouse or your dependent has tuition remission, you will be billed for a prorated portion of the tuition charge.
