Life Insurance
Life insurance offers financial protection for your loved ones in the event of your death. It comes with both free and buy-up options, allowing you to tailor coverage to your needs and provide for your beneficiaries accordingly.
Non-Contributory
Basic Life Insurance
Adelphi University provides employees with basic life insurance equal to 1x their annual salary (with a minimum of $50,000 and a maximum of $500,000). According to IRS regulations, the value of group term life insurance over $50,000 is considered taxable income. The imputed cost of this excess coverage must be included in your income.
For Public Safety, and Local 1102 employees, the basic life insurance benefit remains at $50,000. Please refer to your respective collective bargaining agreements for more details.
Contributory
Optional Life Insurance
You have the option to purchase additional life insurance coverage of up to 3 times your annual salary, with a maximum limit of $500,000*.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)
AD&D insurance offers additional protection for your beneficiary in case of accidental death, and provides benefits to you in case of dismemberment. This coverage is available if you elect contributory life insurance and matches the amount of your contributory life insurance. Various lesser amounts are paid for dismemberment.
Dependent Life Insurance
You can also purchase life insurance for your dependents:
- $5,000 for a spouse
- $1,000 for each eligible dependent child
- This coverage is available if you elect contributory life insurance.
To increase your life insurance coverage, complete the Evidence of Insurability (EOI) application. Use Group Number 903900 for the application.
*Please note that any amount over $300,000 is subject to Evidence of Insurability (EOI). If you do not elect coverage within 31 days of your hire date, you must provide EOI.

Nothing in this summary of benefits may be construed as a contract with any employee, which can occur only by a specific written agreement between Adelphi University and the employee. The University reserves the right to change, modify or eliminate any benefit in this summary at any time, with or without notice, according to the terms of the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Each year, Annual Enrollment is provided in November during which time employees may elect to change plans with the change being effective on the subsequent January 1.
