Adoption Leave
Adelphi University recognizes that parents appreciate flexibility in how they provide care for their children and makes provision to support this.
At Adelphi University, we deeply value the importance of family. To support our employees during the exciting and transformative process of adoption, we offer a dedicated Adoption Leave. This benefit is designed to provide you with the flexibility and support needed to welcome your new family member with confidence and care.
Please note that leaves of absence for union employees are covered in the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
What is Adoption Leave?
Adoption Leave is available to full-time nonunion employees who have been with us for at least one month. It provides up to eight weeks of unpaid leave for the purpose of caring for an adopted child.
Eligibility and Key Features
- Eligibility: Full-time nonunion employees after one month of service
- Duration: Up to eight weeks of unpaid leave to bond with your adopted child
- Flexibility: Use of accrued vacation or personal days to supplement unpaid leave
- Insurance Continuation: Maintenance of your insurance benefits at the active employee rate during the leave period
This leave is available only if you do not qualify for:
- New York State Paid Family Leave (available after six months of full-time employment)
- Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave (available after 12 months of employment and 1,250 hours of work in the previous 12 months)
How to Apply for Adoption Leave
To take advantage of this benefit, simply contact Human Resources to start the process. They will guide you through the steps and ensure you have all the information needed. Your supervisor’s approval is necessary to take this leave.
It’s important to note that an additional 30-day Leave of Absence cannot be added to the Adoption Leave. However, we strive to ensure that your transition back to work is as smooth as possible.
