At Adelphi, research is highly valued for undergrads as well as graduate students. This summer, six undergraduates are making new discoveries—inside and out of the lab.
Scholars Pursuing Arts, Research and Knowledge (SPARK) is working to embed research and creative works in the academic experience of all Adelphi undergraduate students.
How Do I Start?
Students interested in guided research and creative works must obtain a faculty adviser—projects will typically be within your adviser's active research and creative areas.
What Sparks Your Curiosity?
When you picture research, is it only in a lab? Not at Adelphi. Whatever your passion—history, dance, business, literature—and yes, science, you can explore it.
At Adelphi, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your passions and interests right from the start. Research and creative projects are not just for faculty or grad students—the SPARK Center supports undergraduate students in taking on projects that broaden their scholarly and artistic horizons.
Conducting research as an undergraduate student at Adelphi is a rewarding opportunity—you’ll expand on what you’ve learned in the classroom, explore your passions, and gain from the experience of our brilliant and supportive faculty. You’ll also build valuable experiences that shine on your résumé and graduate school applications.
Undergraduate Summer Fellowships Support a Deep Dive into Scholarship
The 2024 cohort of students and mentors for summer fellowships through the SPARK Center, Adelphi Honors College, the Landesberg Family Summer Research Fellowship and the McDonell Summer Research Fellowship took on a broad range of projects that expanded their knowledge beyond the classroom.
English major Brienna (Ennie) Conner is exploring the historical significance of the “Tar Baby” story to uncover the lived experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants in early America.
Why Engage in Research and Creative Work as an Undergraduate Student?
Generate new knowledge, think critically and outside of the box, and fine-tune your collaborative and communication skills. Instead of learning facts and content that others have discovered for you, doing research allows you to apply the knowledge and skills from your classes to discover new information yourself and advance your field. While it can be demanding, research can be an amazingly fulfilling and transforming intellectual and personal experience.
Engaging in a hands-on creative inquiry with Adelphi faculty who are experts in their field will refine your professional interests and establish a relationship with your mentor that often lasts beyond your undergraduate years.
