Education Tracks and Teaching Certification
You can choose from the following three STEP tracks:
Our accelerated secondary education program provides the opportunity to work toward one or more of the following certifications to expand your career opportunities:
- Initial Certificate: Childhood 1–6, Adolescent 7–12, or TESOL PK–12
- Special Education: Childhood 1–6 or Adolescent 7–12 levels
- Middle School Extension: Grades 5–6 or 7–9

Our Scholar Teacher Education Program (STEP) students regularly serve in student-teaching positions in the New York City Department of Education and Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

Application Requirements
First-year applications to STEP must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum 3.0 high school GPA
- If submitting test scores, SAT score of 1090 or higher (minimum 530-560 on each part) or ACT score of 21 (all subscores). Please note that the students may still be referred if applying SAT/ACT optional for Fall 2021.
The structure of STEP is particularly effective in meeting the needs of the transfer student. Most students entering the program at the junior level have a three-year course of study, which takes them through their master’s degree (MA). Transfer students may transfer up to 64 credits.
