There’s a severe shortage of science, math and computer science teachers in underperforming schools. Adelphi’s award-winning STEAM Pipeline program is helping to change that.
Computer Science Education: STEAM Teaching and Learning
Become a fully certified teacher in just a single year with our 30-credit program.
You’ll earn a Master’s degree in Education, become accredited to teach in your discipline (math, science or computer science) and learn creative teaching methods that combine art and design with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
What Makes the Adelphi Master’s Program Distinctive?
- Benefit from our interdisciplinary, lab-based approach to teacher preparation—supported by Adelphi’s long-standing commitment to STEAM education—where STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
- Tailor your degree to your unique professional goals: Choose between teacher certification tracks in math, science or computer science education, or a nondegree track in interdisciplinary STEAM studies.
- Gain valuable hands-on experience through our three-semester sequence in the maker lab, where you’ll learn to master the latest STEAM education tools and technologies, as well as our robust partnerships with New York City and Long Island public schools.
- Take your career to the next level in just a single year: This 30-credit program kicks off with an intensive summer “boot camp” and can be completed in 12 months.
Why STEAM Teaching?
This degree gives educators a competitive edge through real-world training in innovative approaches to urban education, design thinking, digital arts and problem-solving. It’s an ideal springboard for early career teachers seeking their New York state teaching certification as well as recent graduates interested in using their STEM background to become certified teachers. Once you earn your MA in STEAM Teaching and Learning, you’ll be qualified to pursue a range of rewarding career paths, including:
- High school or middle school computer science, math or science teacher
- Elementary school computer or computer science teacher
- Computer/maker lab coordinator
- Advancement to professional teaching certification (if you are an elementary school teacher, ESL teacher, art/music teacher or any other New York state teacher who only has initial certification)
- District leader in interdisciplinary curriculum development
Exceptional Hands-On Learning
The MA in STEAM Teaching and Learning is powered by collaborative initiatives that lead to rich service- and project-based learning experiences.
Our program’s urban focus invites students to engage with the unique opportunities and challenges of teaching math, science and computer science schools today. Courses are offered at our exciting new Brooklyn Center, while your practice teaching can be in New York schools of your choice. You’ll also hone your creativity at our STEM-focused research and practice institute.
The MA’s curriculum builds your expertise in math, science or computer science teaching, and emphasizes creative ways of helping students engage in STEM. You will learn how to make sense of school culture and student identity and develop powerful instructional skills. Three maker lab-based courses will focus on integrating ideas across STEM using art and design, giving you a strong foundation in design thinking, learning theory, and educational technology and equity. In only 12 months, you will be prepared to teach, with all your accreditation criteria met. Your final MA project challenges you to create and design your own STEAM teacher workshop, to be piloted on campus or at a partner school.
