Unemployment insurance is a New York State Department of Labor program. It provides compensation to qualified workers during involuntary periods of unemployment.

This policy outlines the guidelines relating to unemployment insurance for applicable Adelphi employees.

Policy

Employees are covered by Unemployment Insurance, which is entirely paid for by the University. It is available to eligible former employees, and can be applied for through the Department of Labor of the State of New York. The Department of Labor of the State of New York determines eligibility for benefits and the amount and number of payments received. The former employee must contact the New York State Department of Labor to apply for unemployment benefits.

Procedures

If a supervisor is asked whether an employee is eligible for, or would receive, unemployment benefits or if the Department of Labor contacts the supervisor, either over the telephone or in writing, the supervisor should refer the person to the Office of Human Resources.

Supervisors may be asked to attend an Unemployment Hearing, when necessary.
