Policy Statement
Adelphi University requires Shuttle Buses greater than 14 passengers and commercial vehicles (often used by Facilities) to be driven by individuals who hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and have undergone a comprehensive background check and motor vehicle record review. This policy is designed to ensure the safety of our employees, students, and the general public while operating University vehicles.
Most University bus drivers are required to have a Commercial Driver License.
Reason for Policy
The University’s fleet of vehicles is used for official business and requires some drivers who possess the necessary skills and training to operate large vehicles safely. By requiring CDL holders to drive Shuttle Buses greater than 14 passengers and commercial vehicles (Facilities), we can minimize the risk of accidents and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. This policy focuses on the CDL requirements for drivers who operate commercial vehicles (Facilities) or vehicles that transport a significant number of passengers (Shuttle Vehicles).

Policy
The University requires that all drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,011 pounds or more, or any size CMV designed to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsement (see LENS policy).
Adelphi keeps a confidential file on each driver which must be updated periodically to be within the federal mandates. Adelphi is assisted by a third party vendor, which assists to insure all the federal mandates on physicals, drug tests and DOT reviews are completed on a timely basis.
