Update on Post Hurricane Sandy Services at Adelphi University

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Adelphi University worked with local and regional teams to restore full functionality to our Garden City campus and our Hauppauge, Hudson Valley and Manhattan Centers. We also understand that the lives of so many members of our community have been tremendously impacted, and we are committed to being a resource to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our entire region.

  • Academic Scheduling

    • View the fully updated Academic Calendar for Fall 2012.

    • When will we reopen?

      • The Garden City campus and the Hauppauge, Hudson Valley and Manhattan Centers are fully open and the normal schedule of classes has resumed as of Monday, November 5. 

    • What about the classes we missed?

      • In order to make up the classes that were canceled during the week of October 29-November 4 and meet the NY State requirements for class time, the schedule for the remainder of the fall semester will be adjusted as follows:

        Wednesday, Nov. 21 (just before Thanksgiving) will be used to make up classes missed on Monday, Oct. 29. Faculty using Moodle for instruction may elect to substitute Moodle instruction for this missed class.

        Tuesday, Dec. 11 will be the required make-up day for Tuesday October 30.

        Wednesday, Dec. 12 will be the required make-up day for Wednesday, Oct. 31.

        Thursday, Dec. 13 will be the required make-up day for Thursday, Nov. 1.

        Friday, Dec. 14 will be the required make-up day for Friday, Nov. 2.

        To make up for Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4, all Saturday and Sunday classes will be scheduled for extended class time during the remaining four meetings of the semester. This additional time will be approximately 40 minutes per class for full-semester classes. We will announce the exact clock times for those adjusted schedules and any necessary classroom changes by Friday, Nov. 9, or sooner if possible. Faculty using Moodle for instruction may elect to substitute Moodle instruction for this additional weekend time.

        Faculty teaching classes that are completely online or blended will arrange to make-up any instructional time that was lost due to power outages or lack of wireless access.

    • What about Final Exams?

      • Final exams will now begin on Saturday, Dec. 15 and run through Friday, Dec. 21.
      • All finals that were to take place on Thursday, Dec. 13 will now take place on Thursday, Dec. 20, and all finals that were to take place on Friday, Dec. 14 will now take place on Friday, Dec. 21.  These finals will use the originally scheduled hour grid on the new day.
      • Finals originally scheduled on Saturday, Dec. 15 through Wednesday, Dec. 19 will still take place on those days.
    • We recognize that these changes in our schedule may be difficult for some students, faculty, and staff. Unfortunately, the alternative would be to make up those missed classes or finals over a holiday or during January. We believe that the above schedule represents the best balance of instruction we owe to our students, and the break time we appreciate to connect with family and friends.

  • Transportation to Campus

    • We know that getting to campus will be a challenge for many of our students, faculty and staff. The University is poised to be as flexible as possible to assist our community with transportation needs. If you have a disability and need assistance please contact Public Safety at 516.877.3511.

    • By Car

      • We have set up a ride share message board open to all members of the Adelphi community. To access:

        – Visit ecampus.adelphi.edu and log in with your Adelphi username and password
        – Click the “Message Boards” tab.
        – Look for “NEW: Post-Hurricane Sandy Car Pool/Ride Share” listed as the second category.
        – Click the name to see the two boards for Students and Fac/Admin/Staff

      • We have also included information the 511NY service, which is a public ride share service. The eCampus message board is specifically for the Adelphi community.
      • To assist you with parking on the Garden City campus during peak times, the university will resume the Parking Incentive Program at the Garden City Pool on Monday November 5, 2012.  For information on this program please visit adelphi.edu/parking.

    • By Train/Bus/Public Transportation

      • MTA Long Island Rail Road has restored limited service to all branches except the Long Beach branch. We strongly suggest that you continue to monitor the MTA LIRR web site at mta.info/lirr/.There is hourly service to and from Brooklyn from Jamaica.
      • NICE Bus continues to make progress in restoring full service on all routes.  Please visit nicebus.com for the latest schedules.

  • Counseling Services

    • Natural disasters can threaten our sense of control and feelings of safety, affecting many aspects of our lives. In addition to property damage and other losses, events like Hurricane Sandy can result in significant emotional distress.  Feeling physically or mentally exhausted, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, sadness, anger, and having difficulty making decisions are among some of the normal, common, and expected reactions we may experience in response to mental and emotional stressors. However, these feelings can be overwhelming.  If you have trouble coping, help is available at the Adelphi University Student Counseling Center.  The staff provides confidential supportive counseling to students needing assistance. The staff can also provide referrals to other social support services.

    • Students on the Garden City Campus, and Hauppauge and Sayville Centers

      • Walk-in and crisis counseling services are available in person (Garden City Campus, University Center Room 310) and by phone at 516.877.3646 Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

    • Students at the Manhattan Center

      • A counselor is available at the Manhattan Center on Wednesdays from 12 noon until 8 p.m. Additionally, during the weeks of November 5th and November 12th, a counselor will be available on Tuesday and Thursday from 12 noon until 7 p.m. Crisis counseling by phone is available (516) 877-3646 Monday through Thursday, 8:30am – 7:00pm and Friday 8:30am- 4:30pm.

    • Students at the Hudson Valley Center

      • Crisis counseling by phone is available at  516.877.3646 Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

    • Faculty and Staff

      • Counseling and referral services for Adelphi staff, faculty and students are available at the Derner Institute’s Center for Psychological Services. Day and evening appointments are available Monday to Friday in Garden City and at the Manhattan Center.  Call the Garden City office (516) 877-4820 for more information and to schedule an appointment.

  • Housing for Storm Victims

    • We have created a message board to allow people offering housing as well as those seeking accommodations to connect.  The board can be found on eCampus:

      – Visit ecampus.adelphi.edu and log in with your Adelphi username and password
      – Click the “Message Boards” tab. 
      – Look for “NEW: Storm Recovery Housing Accomodations” listed as the first category.
      – Click the name to see the two boards for Students and Fac/Admin/Staff

    • Additional housing options are also available in eCampus through the “Off Campus Housing” service, which can be found on the Services tab.
    • Students seeking temporary on-campus housing due to displacement from Hurricane Sandy should contact the Office of Residential Life & Housing 516.877.3650, housing@adelphi.edu, Earle Hall.

  • Laptop Loan Program

    • Adelphi’s Office of Information Technology, in partnership with the Center for Student Involvement, would like to assist students who were adversely affected by the recent storms. Many of our current student body have lost their personal or family computers or are unable to use them due to housing displacement. We are implementing a special laptop loan program to aid Adelphi students with technology resources needed for their academic success. Please visit the IT website for full details.

      • The Box Office will be open for normal business hours as of Monday, November 5 to begin processing these exchanges and refunds as necessary.

  • How You Can Help

    • The outpouring of support for the blood and the donation drive was unprecedented. As we return to regular operations, we want to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated response for both collection and service opportunities. In the last few hours, we have gotten requests for activities ranging from letter/card writing efforts to first responders, to very generous cash donations. To avoid duplication of effort and to encourage collaboration, if you wish to undertake a disaster response activity, please email your ideas to csi@adelphi.edu and we will post activities for those who wish to join and make matches for those who are undertaking similar activities. These opportunities will be posted onto adelphi.edu and onto the facebook.com/aucsi page. As of today the following activities will remain in place or begin:

    • Donation Drives

      • Garden City: Donation of non-perishable food, water, cold weather clothing, blankets, and essential items such as batteries, baby supplies, toiletries, and clean up supplies such as contractor bags, work gloves, and cleaning products can be dropped off in the University Center (daily from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.).  In addition,  we encourage all students, faculty and staff who know of families or neighbors in need to visit the University Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., beginning Tuesday, November 6, to take what items they know can be useful. Remaining items will be sent to regional distribution sites.
      • Hauppauge: The School of Social Work is running a Hurricane Relief Food Drive with Island Harvest at Adelphi’s Hauppauge Center through December 20. We are asking anyone who can to drop off canned goods, non-perishable foods (rice, pasta, cereal ), personal hygiene items, diapers, or infant formula at the Center at 55 Kennedy Drive, Hauppauge.     • Monetary Support

      • An email about an Adelphi University Employee Grant program will be forthcoming, but in the meantime donations can continue to be made to the Red Cross. The PantherTainment Booth in the University Center Lobby is the site for these donations

    • First Responder Thank You Cards

      • First Responder Thank You Card efforts continue in the University Center Lobby.  Thank you notes from staff and students at the off campus centers may be emailed to csi@adelphi.edu and will be printed out and included in this effort.

    • Volunteering at Disaster Locations 

      • UPDATED Friday, November 30: The Center for Student Involvement will be hosting another trip to a disaster relief area this upcoming weekend. Students who are interested in participating, must come to the Center for Student Involvement, located in the University Center, Room 110, to complete a form. Space is limited and will be first come, first served.

          Depart AU at 8:30 a.m.
          Return AU at 5:00 p.m.
          Volunteers needed to assist in clean-up of houses and working with those affected by the hurricane.Volunteers must wear warm clothing, gloves, and sneakers and/or boots. All volunteers should consider New York State Department of Health recommendations. Sign up at the AUcares volunteer page.
      • Recommendations from the NYS Department of Health
        • The New York State Department of Health (DOH) has issued vaccine recommendations for those individuals who are Emergency Responders or Volunteers for Hurricane Relief sites. The Health Services Center can provide vaccines to registered students and staff at cost; or you may contact your health care provider to determine if they are covered under your insurance plan.
        • The Health Center charges are: Tetanus Toxoid (Td) is $40 or Tetanus diphtheria toxoid (Tdap) is $50, Hepatitis B is $70 (see memo if required) and influenza vaccine is $15.

    • Carpooling

      • We encourage all students and staff to continue their efforts to make ride share arrangements as access to gas continues to be a challenge. Resources are available in the “Transportation” section above.

    • Housing for Storm Victims

      • If you are able to offer temporary housing to storm victims who have been left with severely damaged or destroyed homes, please use our housing board on eCampus to connect with members of our community who may be in need. See the “Housing for Storm Victims” section above for more information.

    • Hurricane-Related Events

      • UPDATED Tuesday, December 4: Operation App
        • On December 15, Adelphi will host Operation App, a program sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) to offer college application assistance to high school seniors affected by Hurricane Sandy.
