"Don’t make excuses about not knowing the rules or obfuscate by, well, obfuscating. Own up and apologize!"
By Robert A. Scott, President, Adelphi University
A seasoned and respected elected state official, who also was a lawyer, once told a group of college presidents that at times it is better to seek forgiveness than permission. He meant that if one needed to take action in advance of a higher authority’s approval, do so, but be sure to seek forgiveness if the higher ups later disapproved. In other words, don’t lie about it. Don’t make excuses about not knowing the rules or obfuscate by, well, obfuscating. Own up and apologize!
