With a growing number of students interested in distance learning, Adelphi is not only expanding its online programs and courses—it is looking for ways its libraries can meet students’ research needs.
Rachel Isaac-Menard, assistant professor of university libraries, devoted her spring semester to the issue while on a Viret Family Faculty Leadership Fellowship, which provides faculty members interested in academic leadership with opportunities to work on projects of importance to the University. Professor Isaac-Menard performed an in-depth analysis of library resources available to online learners, reviewed the University’s distance-education policies and surveyed library users.
Isaac-Menard’s research revealed new services the libraries can offer, including assigning subject-specialist librarians to specific online courses; it also underscored the need for more effective promotion of online library services, as many students and instructors are unaware of the assistance librarians can offer. Her findings will help guide the Adelphi Libraries as they adapt to the academic needs of online education.
