Margaret Gray is thrilled to announce that her first book will be out in November: Labor and the Locavore: The Making of a Comprehensive Food Ethic, published by the University of California Press. In the book Gray examines the conditions of Hudson Valley farmworkers, explores why our sympathies tend to lie with farmers and not their workers, analyzes the power dynamics on the farm and in the state legislature, and investigates how the alternative food movement could embrace labor issues. This semester, she gave talks about her book at the University of Albany and Bard College. Professor Gray also presented a paper titled “Labor & the Locavore: Small Farms, Paternalism and Labor Control” at the American Political Science Association’s Annual Meeting and took part in a roundtable titled “The Social Responsibility of APSA and the Profession.” In addition, she published “Ethical Food: Can Foodies Help Promote Farmworker Justice?” in the fall edition of the journal Progressive Planning.
