Phone-based scams claiming to be from a tech support company.
We have become aware of recent phone-based scams claiming to be from a computer tech support company. In any cases, the caller tries to convince you that “your IP address has been seen”. The callers have been observed calling Adelphi numbers, as well as home numbers.
If you receive an unsolicited phone call by somebody who claims to be a tech support specialist, the call is most likely a scam. Please use caution and:
- Do not purchase any software or services from the caller.
- Never give control of your computer to a third party, unless you are convinced of their good intentions.
- Take the caller’s information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.
- Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from tech support.

Note that some scam artists will leave a call-back number. Do not call back that number, as you may incur high charges to your bill. For more information, visit the Better Business Bureau site.
When in doubt, ask which company they represent, and call that company’s main number. To verify tech support calls that claim to be from Adelphi, please call the IT Help Desk at 516.877.3340.
