On Monday, January 21, Perry Greene, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and inclusion, was presented with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Award by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee of Nassau County. The award, established in the spirit of Dr. King in 1984, honors exceptional persons in all fields of community involvement who strive to “build bridges.”
Since joining Adelphi in 2005, Dr. Greene has devoted himself to serving others by taking acceptance and understanding of diversity to new heights. In his role as Adelphi’s vice president for diversity and inclusion, Dr. Greene has hosted numerous diversity events and lectures, including “Facing Racism,” a series of conversations aimed at making sense of the state of racism in America. He has also co-chaired Adelphi’s Diversity Committee and helped implement diversity programs such as the Diversity Certificate Program, designed to promote a positive, respectful workplace through a series of workshops. The program has even reached beyond Adelphi and into the local community. Dr. Greene has written articles and op-eds on the topic of diversity on college campuses, most recently a piece on hiring and maintaining diverse faculty members in Inside Higher Ed.
Dr. Greene earned a master’s in media ecology and a Ph.D. in English education, both from New York University. His career includes many years as a public school teacher at both the elementary and high school levels, teaching in Harlem, Brooklyn and Malverne, New York.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee of Nassau County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the intellectual advancement of Nassau County youth by way of support through scholarship. Each year, the committee hosts an event to celebrate Dr. King by honoring outstanding members of the community.
