Ryan Monroe receives 2012 President’s Award for Excellence in Service
Ryan Monroe was one of four recipients of the 2012 President’s Award for Excellence in Service in September, which recognizes extraordinary achievements of Adelphi employees. Recipients are individuals who have repeatedly sought improvement of themselves, their units and, ultimately, Adelphi University, and, in doing so, have transcended normal definitions of service excellence. Ryan has been a Network Systems Administrator at Adelphi since 2008, and had previously been a Network Technician in our department since 2005.
As a system administrator, Ryan’s efforts are not always easily seen; however, the work he produces is far reaching and has resulted in numerous applications and services. These include: Google web-based email, calendar and documents for group work; Apple hardware and software platforms; digital signage; audio and video capture technology; and other automated processes.
Ryan was the primary lead for the successful migration to the University-wide Gmail system. His nominators noted the late nights he spent at the office to accomplish this transition with minimal disruption to campus email users. The project allowed the elimination of seven servers, saving money and conserving our consumption of power.
He was also instrumental in setting up an observation system for the Early Learning Center and took into account the necessity to have protocols and procedures in place to ensure the safety of the children.
Some of the comments made on Ryan’s behalf for the nomination:“Ryan’s level of preparedness inspires trust and confidence with our users and his coworkers. What truly separates Ryan …is that he focuses on solutions and goals as opposed to problems and obstacles.”
“Today’s technology needs someone who is dedicated and has a diverse skill set. Supporting a range of infrastructure calls for a person who can stay current with his or her skills. Ryan excels in keeping his knowledge base and skills razor sharp. He accomplishes this through training, online research, speaking with peers and logical thought processes he can apply to his job. He is able to solve problems with outside of the box ideas and critical thinking.”
“Ryan was dedicated, understood the severity of this concern and with his skillset he was able to ensure this occurred …. He anticipated the ELC’s technological needs and developed solutions when confronted with problems and requests.”
