Grant to Adelphi Breast Cancer Program from Nassau County Courthouses
Kiwanis

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program received a grant of
$2600 from the Kiwanis Club of the Nassau County Courthouses in memory of Kathy
Donegan. Ms. Donegan, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2005, first called the hotline
for emotional support when she was diagnosed and then was a hotline volunteer for four
years, providing the same support to others that she had received.

Ms. Donegan had served as president of the Nassau County Courthouses Kiwanis where
she had worked as a clerk. “Kathy was a very special person,” says Sue Deedy Mahoney,
Senior Court Clerk, “and the Adelphi program was important to her.” Ms. Mahoney says
the Kiwanis group at the courthouses is a “close knit family” and has been pleased to
raise these funds for the past 13 years. The money they raise is distributed through
charitable grants to improve the quality of life for children, elderly people and others in
need throughout Nassau County.

Accepting the grant was Sherry Sullivan, a hotline volunteer who was Ms. Donegan’s
friend. “I met Kathy seventeen years ago at the Adelphi Breast Cancer Support Group for
newly diagnosed women and we quickly became friends,” she says. “Kathy was so
grateful for the support group experience, that she became an outreach volunteer. She
flourished in her new role of helping others and giving back to a program near and dear
to her heart.
Kathy would be so honored that this grant is donated in her memory.”

Says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi program,. “Kathy was a
devoted volunteer who always wanted to tell people about the support that the program
provides and this grant will help us in doing that work.”
The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program provides information and
emotional support to people concerned about breast cancer. Call 800-877- 8077. “You are
not alone.”
