A Strong Record of Growth

In 1991, Jerry Mahoney saw a promising investment opportunity in a small New Jersey envelope company. He then began an aggressive growth strategy that saw Mail-Well’s annual sales increase from $15 million to over $2 billion in just 10 short years.

Over the course of a decade, Mr. Mahoney oversaw the acquisition of Georgia Pacific’s envelope business as well as 50 strategic buy-outs of competitors in the US and Canada. In 1995 he guided the company’s IPO, first on the NASDAQ, and later on the NYSE.

At the time of his retirement in 2001, Mail-Well had 16,000 employees, 150 printing facilities, a global leadership position in the printing business, and annual sales of $2.4 billion. Today known as Cenveo, Inc., Mr. Mahoney’s former envelope company continues to be a worldwide leader in commercial printing, envelope manufacturing, and direct mail.

After retirement, Mr. Mahoney was recruited to become a board member and later interim CEO of Florida-based Workflow Management, a publicly traded marketing and printing firm. He became chairman of the company’s board and supervised the sale of the company. Mr. Mahoney remains active in the industry; he invests in several privately owned middle-market companies, serves as a board member, and is currently chairman of two companies.

Before purchasing Mail-Well, Mr. Mahoney was a public accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co., and helped to lead several successful companies including Keene, Bairnco, Polychrome, and Transkrit.

A native of Brooklyn, and the first in his family to attend college, Mr. Mahoney came to Adelphi at the behest of Louise Heim, a family friend and associate professor of biology at the University. He chose Adelphi for its five-year engineering partnership program with MIT. Mr. Mahoney was excited about combining a liberal arts education with a degree from a prestigious engineering school. However, he ultimately chose mathematics over physics and remained at Adelphi.

During his time at Adelphi, Mr. Mahoney was president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and served as president of the Inter-Fraternity Council. He maintained order on campus as a member of the campus police. Mr. Mahoney fondly remembers Ruth Harley from his days in Garden City. After graduating from Adelphi, Mr. Mahoney received a scholarship from Northeastern University, where he earned his master’s in accounting.

Mr. Mahoney and his wife, JoAnne, have been married for 35 years and now split their time between Sag Harbor, New York, and Boca Raton, Florida. They have two adult sons, Scott and Ryan. An avid golfer, “not a fanatic, but I love the game,” Mr. Mahoney has belonged to the Noyac Golf Club in Sag Harbor for more than 30 years.
