A century after the birth of Gordon F. Derner, Ph.D., the founding dean and namesake of our Institute, we have much to celebrate. First, there’s Dr. Derner to whom we pay tribute in this issue of the newsletter. We will honor him again on Friday, November 13, 2015, with a day of programs and talks, including a keynote by Peter Fonagy, Ph.D. I hope that you will join us.

You will also see here how students, faculty members and alumni are carrying out Dr. Derner’s legacy through research, clinical work and outreach.

Beginning this fall, the Derner Institute, in conjunction with Adelphi’s College of Arts and Sciences, will offer a new neuroscience major to undergraduates. Our field is becoming increasingly science-based, and this program will prepare students for new professional opportunities.

A planned new international master’s program will bring the Derner education model to students overseas.

As our alumni have noted, Gordon Derner revolutionized clinical psychology education and forever changed our profession. It is incumbent upon us to find new ways to continue his commitment to relevant teaching, empathic practice and constant improvement.

Sincerely,

Jacques P. Barber, Ph.D.
Dean, Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies
