The Institute launches a five-year B.A./M.A. in General Psychology.

To help undergraduate psychology majors accelerate their careers and graduate training, Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies now offers a five-year B.A./M.A. in General Psychology. The program suits a variety of students, including those looking to develop a focus area in graduate study, those who would like to further their preparation for doctoral study and those who have specific career interests, such as substance abuse counseling or human resource management.

Through the five-year B.A./M.A. psychology program, students will take graduate courses in the fall of their fourth year—or senior year—two courses per semester. They also study during the summer between their fourth and fifth years to ensure timely degree completion.

The program offers three tracks: one in general psychology; one in general psychology with a concentration in substance abuse counseling; and one in general psychology with a concentration in human resource management. Students who choose the substance abuse counseling concentration are eligible for CASAC-T (credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor-trainee) certification.

There are two entry points to the program. Incoming first-year students may apply directly to the five-year B.A./M.A. in General Psychology. Additionally, students who are already enrolled in the B.A. in General Psychology can apply for the five-year B.A./M.A. program. Approval is granted by the chair of the undergraduate psychology department.
