Dr. Jean Lau Chin Completes Women and Leadership Project as a Fulbright Specialist in Hong Kong

Adelphi University is pleased to announce that Dr. Jean Lau Chin, professor in the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies has completed a project on women and leadership for the Gender Studies Program at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)  through the internationally renowned Fulbright Specialists Program.

The Fulbright Specialists Program, created in 2000 to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, provides opportunities to prominent U.S. faculty and professionals to support institutional development and planning at post secondary universities around the world. Notable Fulbright Scholar alumni include Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist; Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation.

Dr. Chin was one of 400 U.S faculty and professionals who traveled abroad in this year through the Fulbright Specialists Program. Throughout May and June, Dr. Chin worked with the Gender Studies program at the University of Hong Kong, providing consultation, training and research on women’s issues and diverse leadership. Utilizing her knowledge on gender research, Dr. Chin sought to improve and bring more global recognition to the only Gender Studies program in Hong Kong. As Hong Kong faces rapid economic, social and political change, Dr. Chin hopes that the program will continue to promote the ideals of gender consciousness and gender equity. Dr. Chin consulted with faculty at CUHK to address the challenges of defining the language of the instruction given changing demographics of the student population, providing internship opportunities for students, and how the curriculum could address more contemporary issues while addressing both global and local issues related to gender. One particular highlight of Dr. Chin’s work in Hong Kong was a series of interviews conducted with Hong Kong Chinese women leaders within higher education, government, and community services. Insights gained from these interviews will advance our understanding of diverse leadership within an international perspective, and on how gender, ethnicity, and context influence the exercise of leadership.

Previous honors for Dr. Chin include recognition from the American Psychological Association, Women in Philanthropy, Asian American Psychological Association, Association for Women in Psychology, and by the Patriots’ Trail Girl Scout Council. An educator, author and licensed psychologist, Dr. Chin has been involved in the mental health and health service fields for more than three decades. She has authored Women and Leadership, The Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination and Learning from My Mother’s Voice. She holds an Ed.D. and M.A. in school psychology from Columbia University and a B.S. in psychology from Brooklyn College.
