Dear Adelphi Community,
As most of us settled safely into our evening routines last night, tragic news broke that a shooter on the Michigan State University campus killed three students and critically wounded five more.
I am heartbroken for the MSU community. They endured unimaginable fear and dread yesterday, like too many campuses before them. In the days and weeks to come, their students, faculty, staff and families will feel grief, loss and trauma. I have reached out to their president and board chair to send our condolences and support on behalf of Adelphi.
Gun violence has become increasingly common and hits very close to home when it strikes a college campus. I assure you that Adelphi University works extremely hard to prepare for and prevent it from happening here. Our highly trained Department of Public Safety regularly completes extensive emergency preparedness exercises. In light of this latest incident, I have asked our Public Safety team to increase patrols and expedite the additional active shooter training planned for our community this year. Our Chief of Campus Safety and Emergency Management, Ray Hughes, will share the safety resources and training available later today.
Please be sure to use the resources that Adelphi offers to support you.
