“Working at Marcum LLP gave me a fresh perspective on how the concepts I teach in class are being carried out by a talented group of HR professionals at a growing firm.” —MaryAnne Hyland, Ph.D.MaryAnne Hyland, Ph.D., associate professor in the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, was recognized with Mark Fogel ’85, chief human resource officer for Marcum LLP and adjunct professor at Adelphi, for their project Trading Places by Human Resource Executive Magazine to have one of the Best HR Ideas for 2012.
Honored alongside such companies as AT&T, Google and Intel, Trading Places was chosen for its value in relating the educational and business worlds to each other through the simple and unique exercise of Dr. Hyland and Mr. Fogel literally trading jobs to gain a broader perspective. The project brought the expertise of Dr. Hyland into the human resource management department at Marcum LLP, an accounting and advisory firm in Melville, during her sabbatical leave in Fall 2011. In return, Mr. Fogel shared his vast business experience by teaching human resource management to M.B.A. students at Adelphi.
Trading Places proved to be a mutually advantageous undertaking for both Adelphi and Marcum LLP. Marcum benefited from enhanced assessments for training and development led by Dr. Hyland. In addition, M.B.A. students at Adelphi profited from their exposure to Mr. Fogel, who is a nationally recognized human resource management leader. “Working at Marcum LLP gave me a fresh perspective on how the concepts I teach in class are being carried out by a talented group of HR professionals at a growing firm,” Dr. Hyland said.
Dr. Hyland earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1999. Prior to her academic career, she worked for the human resources outsourcing and consulting firm Hewitt Associates (now Aon Hewitt). She instructs courses on human resource management at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Her primary research focuses on issues related to balancing work and other life demands. Dr. Hyland has also been involved with the Willumstad School of Business’ Learning Assessment Committee for more than five years. She oversaw learning assessment for the School’s initial AACSB accreditation and currently serves as the committee chair. This committee guides the School’s efforts to evaluate student learning.
Mark Fogel earned his master’s degree from Adelphi University and has senior level and global certifications (SPHR, GPHR) from the Society for Human Resource Management.
