Blanche Provenzano has enjoyed fulfilling careers as a nurse educator and later as a guidance counselor.

Nurse-Educator

Professional Career:

After earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing, a distinction she credits with shaping her career, Ms. Provenzano taught practical nursing at Huntington High School. When that program was reconfigured under the BOCES program, she transitioned to the role of guidance counselor and was able to stay in her school and keep her relationships with her students. She remained an educator and counselor until retirement.

When and why did you first want to become a nurse?

I grew up on Long Island and always wanted to be nurse, but my family couldn’t afford a college education. So, I attended the Southampton School of Nursing to receive my license. I know I wanted to have a four-year college degree, so I began working full-time at Huntington Hospital and enrolled part-time in Adelphi’s School of Nursing.

Do you have favorite memories of your time at Adelphi and your residencies?

The classes were very challenging, but it made our education that much more solid. It was a very good experience, and I always felt comfortable teaching others my skills because I was so confident in the education I had received.

What are some of the changes you have seen in nursing through the years?

Nursing today is so different; it is much more technical than the bedside nursing we practiced back then. I remember giving patients complete bed baths and changing their linens while they were still in their bed. Something as common as a blood transfusion was a totally foreign concept to us.
