What attracts such a wide range of talent to Adelphi? While its proximity to New York City certainly helps, said Christopher Storm Jr., Ph.D., associate provost for faculty advancement and research, Adelphi’s culture is a big incentive to lure new faces.
For students, access to such esteemed professors—in classes of just 21 students or less—has many benefits.
“Working with somebody who is world-renowned brings with it a certain richness in experience,” Dr. Storm said. “It really can open doors in terms of the goals and aspirations a student might have.”
Here are just a few of the University’s accomplished academics:
- Monica Yang, Ph.D., professor of management, teaches classes on business, organizational behavior and management. In 2014–2015, she earned a Fulbright scholarship to travel to Taiwan to study cross-border merger and acquisition activities involving companies in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.
- Carol Cohen, D.S.W., associate professor of social work, has taught at Adelphi since 2002, and has more than three decades of social work experience. In 2012, she went to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a visiting scholar under the Fulbright program. She has worked with social work programs around the world.
- Florence Myers, Ph.D., professor of communication sciences and disorders, is an expert in the speaking disorder known as “cluttering.” She traveled to The University of Hong Kong for several weeks in 2011 under a Fulbright award.
- Subadra Panchanadeswaran, Ph.D., associate professor of social work, has spent more than 20 years researching issues surrounding gender-based violence around the world. Her work has focused on female sex workers in India, substance-using populations in the United States, and South Asian immigrant women in New York City. She received a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar Award for Academic Excellence in 2014–2015 .
- Gita Surie, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Management, was a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Scholar in India in 2013–2014. She traveled to India to examine how clean energy technologies were impacting rural communities without access to such essentials as clean water and power.
- Paul Moravec, D.M.A., is a renowned composer and a University Professor. His most recent work, an oratorio about the Underground Railroad, premieres on May 7, 2018, at Carnegie Hall. He won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in music for his work Tempest Fantasy. He is also a recipient of many other awards, including recognition from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Academy in Rome, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Philosophical Association and the Institute for Advanced Study.
- Jacques Barber, Ph.D., is professor and dean of Adelphi’s world-renowned Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology. Recognized internationally for his research into the process and outcomes of psychotherapy, he has published more than 180 refereed journal articles in those areas. His topics of research include depression, panic attacks, substance addiction and personality disorders.
- Andrew Safyer, Ph.D., dean of the University’s highly regarded social work program, is a nationally recognized researcher in adolescent mental health. His honors include the competitive National Institute of Mental Health Faculty Scholar Program, which provided support for his research. He is the current chair of the Council on Social Work Education and a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
