Adelphi University is pleased to announce the Green Expo 2012 to take place on Friday, October 12, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to be held in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. This event, sponsored by the Campus Sustainability Committee, is part of Family Weekend at Adelphi from October 12 to 14. Families who are visiting their students over the weekend are welcome. Free earth-friendly giveaways will be offered.
One of the most environmentally efficient campuses of the Northeast, Adelphi is striving now more than ever to make its lush 75 acres and 300,000 square feet of new buildings greener. This event will highlight some of the initiatives Adelphi has taken to promote a more green campus. More than 30 of the University’s vendors have been invited to showcase products, services, and resources which add to Adelphi’s sustainability commitment. Many participants throughout Adelphi’s community will participate in the expo including departments, student clubs, environmentally based organizations, and the children from the Alice Brown Early Learning Center. The day’s event will include the unveiling of a promotional video “Adelphi Goes Green” produced by Justin Migaldi ’13. A main feature of the event will be the showing of the film, “One Water,” executive produced by Adelphi’s College of Arts and Sciences Dean Sam L Grogg. A call to action on the global freshwater crisis, the 68-minute film first premiered at the 2008 Miami International Film Festival on February 22, 2008.
Adelphi University is proud of its efforts to green the campus and endeavors that continue to set the standard for others to follow in areas of energy conservation and sustainability. In November 2006, Adelphi began relying 100 percent on natural, organic techniques to maintain the flora around campus. All commercial pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and petroleum-based fertilizers have been eliminated from Adelphi’s grounds maintenance plan. In 2010, the University made an investment in clean renewable energy to minimize the impact on the environment. Adelphi has seen a 36% reduction in water usage through the instillation of water-efficient toilets; 10 filtered bottle filling stations to reduce the use of plastic containers; and the “Green Man” mascot has been spotted on campus to serve as a reminder for our community to keep it green. For the first time, all of the University’s sustainability initiatives to improve the environment will be incorporated into one all-day event.
Adelphi University has been the recipient of a plethora of environmental action accolades including NE-10 Conference Champs in the EPA Green Power Challenge, Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges, Member of EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, Cool Schools List by the Sierra Club, Excellence in Green Information Technology by Computerworld, winner of the 2008 Regional Commuter Choice Outstanding Achievement Award by The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council and Long Island, and 2009 Clean Air NY Champion, among others.
