Adelphi University has received the 2018 INSIGHT Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award in recognition of its commitment to diversity and inclusion. Adelphi is one of only four private colleges in New York state to receive a HEED Award.

Perry Greene, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and inclusion, spoke on the importance of the award and what it symbolizes for Adelphi’s commitment to diversity.

“In 2015, as part of the University’s strategic plan, Momentum, and under the leadership of the University’s first female president, Dr. Christine Riordan, we set out to become a model for diversity and inclusion,” said Dr. Greene. “The Adelphi community came together and worked hard to make that goal a reality, not to check off boxes of our accomplishments, but because it is the right thing to do for students, ourselves and the broader community. The HEED Award represents acknowledgment of our efforts as we continue on this journey to become a true and deserving model of diversity and inclusion.”

The HEED Award is the only national recognition that honors individual institutions for being outstanding examples of colleges, universities or health profession schools that are committed to making diversity and inclusion a top priority across their campuses.

Adelphi’s efforts and commitment to improving diversity on campus have resulted in the Class of 2022 being one of the most diverse in the University’s history, with almost half of new first-year students identifying as nonwhite. Additionally, people of color make up more than 40 percent of faculty hired in the past two years.

Additionally, as part of Adelphi’s efforts to promote a climate of intercultural awareness and respect community-wide, a Diversity Certificate Program has been offered to faculty and staff members. The workshop addresses diversity and inclusion holistically, including, but not limited to, race, creed, color, national origin, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, religion, and marital or veteran status.
