Adelphi University’s New York Noyce STEAM Pipeline: Preparing Next-Gen Science Teachers has been recognized by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award. The honor is given to innovative programs that help members of underrepresented groups entering the science, technology, engineering and math fields.
The STEAM Pipeline program is designed to recruit, support and prepare students from underrepresented groups (including women) for meaningful and rewarding careers as science teachers. The five-year, combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program embraces a STEAM (STEM plus Art and Design) approach to engage and instruct students in grades 7 through 12 in courses across the science disciplines.
This innovative program was developed by Tracy Hogan, PhD, associate professor in Adelphi’s Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, and Cindy Maguire, PhD, academic director of Adelphi’s Levermore Global Scholars and Art and Design Education programs.
“This program is one of many at Adelphi that support our commitment to be a model of diversity and inclusion while ensuring the success of all our students—in the classroom and beyond,” said President Christine M. Riordan. “I am very proud of our dedicated faculty members who develop and drive meaningful opportunities like the STEAM Pipeline program, and I am grateful that we have been recognized for the innovative way we are enabling members of underrepresented groups to build careers in fields involving science, technology, engineering and math.”
In 2018, Adelphi’s Horace G. McDonell Science Research Fellowship program won the Inspiring Programs award. The University was also recognized earlier this year for its contributions in STEM with a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) grant earlier this year.
Adelphi will be featured along with other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity’s September 2019 issue.
