Adelphi Deepens Connection to a Home and School for Vulnerable Children in Kenya

Anne Mungai, Ph.D., interim dean of the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, has been providing for children in her native Kenya since 2005. That’s when she and her husband, George, an adjunct professor in the Ammon School, established an orphanage for toddlers in Wangige. They later set up a school for underserved children in the community, and in 2014, they established the Caroline Wambui Mungai Foundation, named for their second daughter, an aspiring teacher who passed away in her last semester at Adelphi, just before receiving her master’s degree in early childhood education. The Adelphi community has provided constant support for Dr. Mungai’s mission over the years, with faculty members, administrators, students and alumni traveling to Kenya as volunteers. Students also hold an annual fundraising walk and clothing drive, and the University has made numerous donations to the school in Kenya, including computers from the Office of Information Technology. The latest donation—of unused tables and chairs—was made last semester; they will be shipped to Kenya and installed in classrooms.
