Ern Knox ‘75 came to Adelphi first as a commuter student from Roosevelt, and later as a resident student, to study psychology. He found a strong community in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the first Black fraternity on Long Island, as a member of its second pledge class. SharRon McCoy-Knox, an aspiring nurse, commuted from Freeport. SharRon was actively involved in student life and had a role in establishing the first Black sorority at Adelphi, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Growing up, Sarafina Bush ’12 always loved dance and theater. It seems preordained, as the daughter of Adelphi sociology professor Melanie Bush, PhD, she was named after the title character in the musical Sarafina!, which depicts the story of a group of South African students brave enough to participate in the Soweto riots against apartheid.

The Equitable Adelphi Action Team was formed in the summer of 2020 to help create and sustain an inclusive campus community. Formed by the Division of Student Affairs, the team consists of faculty members, administrators and students. Now is a great time for students to join and use their voices to bring forth change on campus.

This fall, Adelphi welcomes a landmark first-year class. A record 1,330 new students joined our Panther family, from 34 states and 23 countries. More than 300 transfers and 820 graduate students are continuing their academic journey with us this fall in our eight world-class colleges and schools. And we are joined on campus this year by 30 of our first community college students through our innovative Nassau-Adelphi Gateway program.

When Carlos Ventura, now a senior majoring in biochemistry, first came to Adelphi in Fall 2018, the first-generation college student attended a meeting of the Latino Student Association (LSA) and immediately connected with the members of the group. In early May 2016, Adelphi University raised its first Pride flag as a permanent representation of the University's support for and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. Its appearance on campus was a combined effort of the LGBTQ+ Task Force, the LGBTQ+ and Allies Committee and the LGBTQ+ Empowerment Group.

As a nursing major at Nassau Community College, Will Torres, now a rising senior and first-generation college student, realized he wanted to explore other options at a four-year institution. He wanted a campus close to his Glen Cove hometown that offered small classes and individually tailored instruction. He also wanted a friendly and inclusive campus.
