Greg Bouris asked 200 high school athletes to lift their left foot off the floor. All gamely followed his instructions, leaning on teammates for balance in the Ruth S. Harley University Center’s main ballroom on January 6. Then Bouris, lecturer and director of Adelphi University’s undergraduate sport management program, quipped: “Now you’re all starting off the new year on the right foot!” The room erupted into adolescent groans, but his point was well received.

Retired educator Judith Ammerman, MA ’64, MS ’73, has always championed learning as vital to shaping lives and forging futures. And, as a lifelong philanthropist who earned two master’s degrees at Adelphi, she has generously established three endowed funds supporting students, faculty and the University with a planned gift of $1.5 million. 

Language is an essential tool for connecting with others. As the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) states, effective communication is a human right that should be accessible to all. It is a right that speech-language pathologists and audiologists help people with language disorders exercise.

It's been another great year of academic achievement and recognition at Adelphi.

As a critical scholar, Eric Knee, PhD, assistant professor of health and sport sciences, often studies how systems of oppression create inequities in society.

A new interdisciplinary, open access scholarly journal will soon be published—with leadership from Adelphi Professor Reem Khamis, PhD, and support from Adelphi University Libraries—to bridge the knowledge gap surrounding speech and communications disorders as they relate to marginalized people and groups.

Throughout our 125-year history, many of Adelphi’s women leaders were the only women in the classroom, boardroom or corner office—and had to blaze a trail for the women who followed in their respective fields.

Julianne Farrell, a rising senior, launched a chapter of this organization that provides a place for students to discuss mental health issues, support one another and learn how they can advocate to help others.

The New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) has awarded Adelphi University a $9 million Teaching Fellows Program grant. The six-year grant, $1.5 million each year, will prepare an estimated 900 teaching fellows for New York City public schools at Adelphi—about 150 per year.
