The Faculty in Residence (FIR) Program bridges academic and residential life, fostering deeper connections between students and faculty through formal and informal engagements.

Overview

The FIR Program, sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and facilitated by the Office of Residential Life and Housing, strengthens the integration of academic and co-curricular experiences. The FIR is a live-in faculty member who, while collaborating with Residence Life staff to create an inclusive and dynamic residential learning environment, also maintains their academic responsibilities and contributes to the academic community.

The FIR plays a crucial role in cultivating a welcoming and affirming community that promotes student engagement, belonging, career readiness, and holistic development. By fostering meaningful faculty-student interactions, the FIR enhances student experience and contributes to lifelong learning and success, making your role as a faculty member in this program invaluable.

Position Goals

  • Foster social, professional, and academic engagement to promote leadership, holistic development, and active participation in and beyond the classroom.
  • Increase faculty presence and role modeling in residential programs and activities.
  • Connect students with meaningful co-curricular opportunities, both on and off campus.
  • Serve as a faculty and residential students’ liaison to foster significant interactions outside the classroom.
  • Design and implement programs that promote student learning, inclusivity, and community engagement.

Eligibility and Terms of Service

  • The position is open to full-time faculty. Preference will be given to those with experience in student learning, residential life, and academic engagement.
  • Appointment is for two years, with an optional third year by mutual agreement.
  • The FIR must move in by mid-August and participate in student move-in programs and events.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • As an FIR, your visibility within the Residential Life community is key. Your presence and active participation in community events and activities will not only enhance the student experience but also contribute to the overall success of the program. Your role as an integral member of the Residential Life community is recognized and valued.
  • Host at least one social, cultural, or academic monthly event.
  • Actively promote academic enrichment opportunities to residents, such as study groups, academic workshops, and guest lectures. The goal is to provide a diverse range of opportunities that cater to different academic interests and needs.
  • Collaborate with residential students, Resident Assistants, and Student Affairs departments to support student success.
  • Attend Residential Life events, select staff meetings, and move-in events as academic commitments allow.

Student Engagement

  • Foster meaningful interactions with students through programs, emails, check-ins, and one-on-one conversations.
  • Serve as a role model and resource for students.
  • Ensure availability and approachability for students seeking support.

Programming

  • Plan and implement one monthly program tailored to student interests and global or campus events.
  • Host at least one student dinner per academic year.
  • Conduct assessments to measure the effectiveness of programs in achieving Residence Life’s learning outcomes.

Administrative Tasks

  • Meet monthly with the Residential Life and Housing Director to address community issues and programming initiatives.
  • Submit end-of-year reports and reflections.
  • Attend educational development training sessions.
