At Adelphi University, we understand the challenges of balancing academic commitments with the responsibilities of becoming a new parent.
Our Student Pregnancy and Parental Leave Policy furthers Adelphi University’s commitment to programs and services that help student-parents meet their family care obligations while they pursue their academic goals. Further, it aligns with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq.—a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities.
Adelphi University’s Student Pregnancy and Parental Leave Policy provides that a student who is pregnant may:
- Continue to participate in classes and activities.
- Receive reasonable modifications with the same adjustments/accommodations provided to a student with temporary medical conditions.
- Arrange alternative timelines for the completion of coursework missed during the student’s absence.
- Be excused from class attendance to allow for milk expression.
- Require modified physical environments (e.g., accessible seating) and mobility support.
Policy Highlights
- Academic Continuity: The policy allows pregnant students to maintain their full-time or part-time status, ensuring uninterrupted academic progress and a seamless return to coursework, research, and teaching.
- Parental Leave Eligibility: This includes students who have recently given birth, adopted, or are the partners/spouses of individuals who have recently given birth.
- Modification Period: Typically, the six-week period following the birth or adoption.
- Voluntary Disclosure: Students are encouraged to disclose their pregnancy or adoption status if they wish to seek modifications.
- Faculty Responsibilities: Faculty members must excuse medically necessary absences related to pregnancy and allow students to make up missed work.
How to Request Modifications
Complete the Student Pregnancy and Parenting Modification form with the required documentation.
Submit your request at least 30 days in advance, if possible.
While pregnancy itself is not a disability in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), some students may have one or more impairments related to their pregnancy that qualify as a “disability” under the ADA. Students who wish to request a reasonable ADA accommodation based on a pregnancy-related disability should contact the Student Access Office.
What to Expect When Requesting a Modification
- Students will receive a non-exhaustive list of potential modifications and information about Adelphi University’s Sex Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct and Other Prohibited Conduct Grievance Procedures
- Once the Title IX Office receives a request for modification, it will begin the evaluation process. If a medically necessary leave of absence is requested, the Title IX Coordinator will refer the student to the Office of Academic Services and Retention.
- The Title IX Coordinator will work with the student and any faculty members to create a plan for completing coursework and continuing the student’s education. Individual plans may be adjusted as circumstances change.
