J-1 Insurance Requirements
Program participants and their dependents in the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program are required to have medical insurance coverage for themselves and any dependent for the entire program duration.
Minimum Health Insurance Benefits
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
- Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
- A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
An insurance policy secured to meet the benefits requirements must be underwritten by an insurance corporation with an A.M. Best rating of “A-” or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of “A-I” or above, a Standard and Poor’s Claims Paying Ability rating of “A-” or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above. Alternatively, the sponsor may ascertain that the participant’s policy is backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor’s home country.
Student Program Participants
Adelphi University provides a comprehensive student health insurance plan that complies with the federal mandates under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and New York State Mandates. The University requires all international students to be insured by this plan to ensure its students are adequately protected for their time here in the Garden City, NY campus community. The university insurance covers from August 10 – August 9 of the academic year. Students are automatically billed for the insurance coverage and provided an opportunity to waive out with compatible coverage through the office of Health Services.
Research and Short-Term Scholar Program Participants
Individual research scholars are independently required to purchase private insurance which meets J-1 requirements and provide International Services with a copy of the policy plan prior to the program start date.
