Adelphi University is proud to be an approved sponsor of J-1 Exchange Visitors, including Professors, Research Scholars, and Short-Term Scholars, through the U.S. Department of State. This designation allows talented international scholars to join our vibrant academic community, contributing to research, teaching, and professional observation across our eight distinguished Colleges and Schools.
Inviting a J-1 Scholar
Academic schools seeking to invite a J-1 scholar must screen and select candidates to ensure they meet the following criteria:
- The position is a non-tenure-track research or teaching appointment approved by the Dean;
- The applicant possesses appropriate academic credentials (minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate experience in the field);
- The program aligns with the applicant’s background, needs, and experience;
- The applicant demonstrates sufficient English language proficiency;
- The program supports the academic and research missions of the school.
To initiate the J-1 Visa process, the Academic School must submit the following documents to International Services:
- Invitation Letter: Issued by the Dean, including the participant’s name, J-1 category, site of activity, supervising faculty, program dates, research field, and any financial support provided.
- English Proficiency: Completed English Proficiency Report with accompanying documentation.
- Proof of Credentials: Updated CV and relevant academic credentials.
- Research Proposal: Description of the proposed research, including timeline and outcomes.
Applying for Your DS-2019
After being invited by the Academic Dean, you will receive an invitation to the International Services Portal, where you will need to submit your request. If you need assistance or have questions throughout the process, our dedicated staff in International Services is here to support you.
Required Forms
Please have ready the following documents saved as PDFs ready to upload as part of your request:
- Proof of Financial Support: Adequate financial resources to support an estimated $1,850 per month. Affidavit of Support;
- Health Insurance Guarantee: Signed by the Exchange Visitor. Health Insurance Guarantee
- DS-2019 Request Form: Completed by the Exchange Visitor. DS-2019 Request Form
- J-1 Application Fee: $75 non-refundable J-1 processing fee. (Paid following the issuance of the University ID via Flywire).

J Exchange Visitor Categories
Adelphi University is also authorized to use the following categories for eligible J-1 exchange visitors.
A professor is an individual invited by the Dean for a non-tenure-track appointment primarily engaged in teaching or lecturing.
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate experience in the field.
- Demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency;
- A minimum stay of three weeks is required.
- A maximum stay of five years is allowed.
- Will become subject to the 24 Month Bar on Repeat Participation upon the conclusion of the program
- May become subject to the 2 Year Home Residency Requirement
A research scholar is an individual invited by the Dean for a non-tenure-track appointment primarily conducting research.
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate experience in the field.
- Demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency;
- A minimum stay of three weeks is required.
- A maximum stay of five years is allowed.
- Will become subject to the 24 Month Bar on Repeat Participation upon the conclusion of the program
- May become subject to the 2 Year Home Residency Requirement
A short-term scholar is an individual invited by the Dean to visit the US for up to six months to lecture, observe, consult, and participate in seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or similar types of educational and professional activities.
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate experience in the field.
- Demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency;
- A minimum stay of one day is required.
- A maximum stay of six months is allowed.
- May become subject to the 2 Year Home Residency Requirement
- Will NOT become subject to the 24 Month Bar on Repeat Participation upon the conclusion of the program
