Creative Writing Workshop
Practice writing poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction this summer in our small workshop format.
This credit-bearing program is scheduled to take place from July 13-August 2, 2025 on Adelphi’s Garden City Campus.
In this course, students will be introduced to creative writing by reading, evaluating, and creating pieces in the genres of fiction, poetry, and dramatic writing. Students will create works in all three genres, and one genre will be chosen for a final project, which will be presented in a final portfolio and presentation. In this course, you’ll read published authors and pay attention to their craft, write your own work, and get feedback from your peers. Students who study English and Creative Writing can go on to enjoy successful careers as teachers, lawyers, publishers, editors, librarians, writers. ad executives, administrators, social media managers, academics, journalists, web producers and more.
You will learn the writing process by:
- Drafting creative exercises
- Practicing close reading
- Participating in the constructive critiquing of the work of your peer
- Practicing self-editing
- Improving creative work through multiple drafts in a sequence of revisions
You will learn literary tools by
- Deploying close reading skills
- Describing, analyzing, and synthesizing literary terms
You will learn literary and scholarly prose by
- Demonstrating an understanding of vocabulary, concepts, literary techniques
- Writing varied, complex prose, employing good grammar, using appropriate formats, and carefully proofreading
