Robert B. Willumstad ’05 (Hon.)
Adelphi University Chair Emeritus Robert Willumstad served as chairman and CEO of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group before leading the company as president and chief operating officer, a role he held until his retirement in 2005. After his successful career with Citigroup, he served as chairman of the board of American International Group Inc. (AIG). He then co-founded Brysam Global Partners, where he served as a senior advisor.
Willumstad’s highly respected leadership and expertise have led to positions on the boards of directors of multinational corporations including MasterCard International, SC Johnson and the Commercial International Bank of Egypt. He has also served on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity and he is a trustee for the American Scandinavian Foundation.
A graduate of Adelphi, Willumstad served on the University’s board of trustees, including a term as chair, from 2005 to 2017; he was named chair emeriti in 2017. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and community involvement, Willumstad received an honorary degree from the University in 2005. In 2006, Willumstad donated $1 million in support of the University’s first-ever comprehensive campaign, and his transformational multimillion-dollar gift in 2012 led to the renaming of Adelphi’s business school, now known as the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.
