John’s remarkable legacy of generosity and compassion lives on at Adelphi and at every organization where he gave his dedication, spirit and talent.
Trustee Emeritus John J. Gutleber was a native Long Islander who had an exceptional career in banking and real estate. Before his passing in 2018, he was president and chief executive officer of Castagna Realty Company, based in Manhasset, New York.
A generous supporter of the University, Gutleber served on the Adelphi University Board of Trustees for 12 years, including terms on the executive committee and as board secretary before earning emeritus status in 2014. During Gutleber’s term of service, he chaired the trustee committees on buildings and grounds, finance and administration, investment, and trustee affairs.
Gutleber was honored with the Outstanding Alumnus Award at the first President’s Gala in 2001. A member of Chi Sigma fraternity, he supported priorities including the Adelphi Fund, the Campaign for Adelphi, the Golf Classic, the Chi Sigma Fund and student scholarships. He also established a permanent legacy as a member of the Ruth S. Harley Planned Giving Society the establishment of the endowed Gutleber Family Scholarship. He was actively involved in his community, including as a board member of the Long Island Association and of The Viscardi Center, in Albertson, New York, a network of nonprofits that employ and educate individuals with disabilities. He also endowed a transformative undergraduate scholarship for graduates of the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center to attend Adelphi.
