Helen Baldwin ’18
The Augusta Uhlich and Helen Baldwin Memorial Scholarship preserves the legacy of two Adelphi alumnae and supports second-, third- and fourth-year students in pursuit of their dreams.
Helen Baldwin and classmate Augusta Uhlich attended Adelphi when it was known as Adelphi College, located in Brooklyn and connected with Adelphi Academy, a private preparatory school. At the time, teacher education was the college’s primary mission and the academy offered the ideal training ground for preparing teachers. Students at the college could earn a bachelor’s degree simultaneously with a teaching certificate that qualified them to teach in New York state public schools. In 1911—shortly before Baldwin matriculated—roughly half of Adelphi College alumni were serving as teachers in New York schools.
In 1999, Baldwin’s estate made provisions for the establishment of the Augusta Uhlich and Helen Baldwin Endowed Scholarship fund, which provides financial support to sophomores, juniors and seniors with strong academic records.
