Thomas F. Motamed ’71
Adelphi Chair Emeritus Thomas F. Motamed was a well-respected leader in the insurance industry. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Adelphi University and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the Widener University Delaware Law School before embarking on a career in the world of property and casualty insurance.
Prior to serving as chair and CEO of CNA Financial Corporation from 2009 to 2016, he spent more than 30 years at The Chubb Corporation, where he rose to vice chair and chief operating officer.
Motamed’s expertise in the insurance industry was surpassed only by his commitment to philanthropy. He brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the boards of directors of After School Matters and World Business Chicago.
Motamed was a loyal friend and generous supporter of Adelphi who served with distinction as a member of the board of trustees from 2004 to 2016, including as chair of the board from 2008 until 2011. He also served as vice chair of the Advancement Committee and co-chaired the Steering Committee for the University’s $56 million comprehensive campaign.
In 2010, Motamed became a member of Adelphi’s Million Dollar Roundtable with a $1 million gift to establish the Thomas F. and Christine B. Motamed Scholarship to support students in the Honors College. Motamed Field on Adelphi’s Garden City campus was named in recognition of his generous gift and service to the University.
