Accessibility & Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. First articulated by CAST in the 1990s and now the leading framework in an international reform movement, UDL informs all of our work in educational research and development, capacity building, and professional learning (CAST).

The three key principles of UDL are to provide:

• Multiple means of representation (ways for students to take in learning)
• Multiple means of expression (ways for students to express what they learned)
• Multiple means of engagement (ways for students to be motivated to learn)
