Music education in all forms ideally supports and respects diversity of voice and varied forms of creative expression through collaborative, creative learning environments where unique musical identities are valued. Learners develop their personal musical identities relative to their lived experiences and societal and cultural environments. These influences serve as structuring elements in the formation of learners' musical identities, and are maintained through communication, interaction, and social relationships.
Teachers observe, listen, and learn alongside students, collaboratively providing provocations for deeper levels of inquiry. Learners are empowered to assert their agency and autonomy through relevant, musical ways of knowing. Teachers and students function as co-researchers (partners in inquiry), increasing possibilities for all to invent and discover, and continuously reinventing themselves amidst collegial and creative classroom climates.
Teachers imagine and scaffold learning environments through their organization of space, learning provocations, materials, and situations, with the goal of providing optimal conditions for creative, relevant, and responsive learning opportunities. Teachers and students are protagonists in their own lived musical narratives, engaging in dynamic learning exchanges. Differences are reimagined as assets. Learning community members reach beyond their institutions and advocate in support of their ideals, enacting educational change beyond the academy by engaging in socially-relevant, community-based music making.
