The Department of Theatre presents two one-act plays: Suppressed Desires by Susan Glaspell and George Cram Cook and Seaweed by Alice Gerstenberg.

Directed by Triza Cox

Adelphi University Theatre Department will present two one act plays from icons of the American Little Theater movement. Alice Gerstenberg’s Seaweed explores the future prospects and dating escapades of twenty-somethings in the 1920s. It’s “Sex and the City” but only four years after women received the right to vote. Susan Glaspell and George Gram Cook’s Suppressed Desires brings the audience into the world of a 1914 marriage where a husband, wife, and her sister interrogate the psychological meaning of every conscious and unconscious utterance.

This production is the result of a partnership with Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre, a New York-based company with a mission to explore the classics through the lens of gender equity. These plays were discovered through the curation of their Expand the Canon initiative (expandthecanon.com), which is a call to action to recognize classic plays that were written by women.
