In this workshop, mental health professionals, including clinicians, social workers, and psychologists, will explore the complex interplay between artificial intelligence (AI) and mental health.

Overview

This session will reveal the dual nature of AI technologies—their potential to both inflict harm and facilitate healing. Participants will examine the detrimental effects of AI-generated deepfakes on gender-based violence and trauma, the influence of AI chatbots on client isolation and their associated risks of exacerbating suicidal tendencies, and the anxiety induced by AI plagiarism detection tools in educational environments. Conversely, the workshop will spotlight the beneficial uses of AI, such as therapeutic chatbots that have proven effective in administering cognitive-behavioral therapy to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, discussions will cover AI tools designed to analyze therapy sessions and craft CBT-focused homework, illustrating how AI can be harnessed to improve mental health interventions. Beyond just a learning platform, this training will also encourage dialogue on the need for informed advocacy to drive responsible legislation and further research, ensuring the protection of mental health in the digital age. This workshop is designed to equip professionals with the necessary knowledge and tools to adeptly support their clients and communities amidst the rapid advancements in digital technology.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will explore how AI technologies, like deep fakes and therapeutic chatbots, can both harm and enhance mental health, understanding the implications for clinical practice. 
  • Participants will learn about the ethical considerations, including privacy issues
    and the potential for misuse of AI technologies, and discuss the need for advocacy to influence legislation and research in the field of AI and mental health.
  • Participants will gain insights into effectively utilizing AI tools, such as AI-generated CBT homework and therapy analysis tools, to improve client care while maintaining ethical standards.

Presenter Bio

Dr Marina Badillo-Diaz, LCSW

Dr. Badillo-Diaz is an experienced school administrator and counseling director with a demonstrated history of working in community mental health and in education as a social worker. Currently, Dr. Badillo-Diaz is a consultant focusing on the training of educators and social workers with MABD Consulting. She is also an adjunct professor and board member of the National School Social Work Association of America. She is also the author of the blog, “The AI Social Worker”, a 21st Century Skills and AI guide for Social Workers. Her areas of interest include 21st-century skills, social-emotional learning programming, school social work practice, education, youth mental health, clinical supervision for social workers, AI Applications, data management, and career development.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
