Please join the Center for Student Involvement in welcoming Dr. Sentwali Bakari, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, as he presents on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and leadership lessons for today’s students.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Bakari is the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York and is a member of the Executive Leadership team. Dr. Bakari is responsible for an array of student services at Adelphi University that includes, but not limited to, Counseling and Health Services, Student Involvement and Co-Curricular Leadership, Student Conduct, Residence Life, and Housing, Multicultural Student Organizations and various diverse student clubs and organizations, Orientation, Student Access, and more. Prior to Adelphi University, Dr. Bakari served as the Vice-Chancellor for Student Success at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Dean of Students and Senior Student Affairs Officer at Drake University, and Dean of Student for Semester at Sea.
Dr. Bakari has worked at Texas Christian University, Hartwick College, State University of New York-Oswego, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Dr. Bakari is passionate about promoting and infusing global and multicultural engagement with today’s youth and college students. He received the International Education Administrators Fulbright Award to the United Kingdom in 2013, participated in an African American faculty delegation to Israel in 2012, and co-lead faculty/staff-directed travel courses to Egypt and Turkey.
Dr. Bakari completed his Ph.D. in College Student Personnel Administration and Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Bakari has presented at national conferences such as the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), National Association of Student Affairs Administration (NASPA), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE), and served for many years as a Co-Lead Facilitator for the LeaderShape Institute. Dr. Bakari enjoys photography, jazz, soul and Latin music, and outdoor music festivals.
