Rahsaan Mahadeo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American and African Studies. In his recent book, Funk the Clock: Transgressing Time while Young, Perceptive, and Black, he explores how black and other racialized youth in urbanized space reckon with time.

Funk the Clock

What does it mean to use time that does not belong to you?

It means that your “time use” will be read as “time theft,” and thus criminalized. For Black youth in poor, urbanized space, it means they are more likely to owe than own time. Racialized violence takes time. Not only does it take time to process racialized violence, but time is taken by racist individuals and systems.
