High school students will delve into intensive hands-on workshops in dance, music and theatre during A Day with the Arts.
This year’s event will be hosted in-person.

Workshops
The maximum number of students allowed to participate is 15 students per school. All workshops will have varying capacities for each session and will accommodate guests on a first come, first served basis. Workshop selection is subject to change.
Students are required to pre-register for the workshops. A form will be sent for the students to complete upon registration. All students must register for the workshops no later than Friday, September 12, 2025.
Theatre
Makeup for the Stage
his workshop will explore makeup applications and techniques to prepare you for Halloween activities.
Mask Making and Decorating
In this workshop, students will make and decorate their own theatrical mask using classical techniques such as papier-mâché, painting, and applique. They will also learn about the history of masks in performance including Greek drama, Commedia dell’arte, Noh Theater and into today.
Stage Combat
Using techniques to create safe effective fight storytelling. Students will learn and then show prepared choreography.
Speaking with Dialects
How do actors learn to sound British, Russian or like anyone else? What are the techniques used, and can you learn some of the basics? Of course you can! You’ll learn and practice the basics of a British accent, and learn how it’s all done.
Theatre Games
At the heart of all creativity is play. Theatre games are an important part of a young actor’s training because they can teach valuable theatre skills while allowing students to have fun, build confidence, stretch their imagination and grow as an ensemble.

See a live performance of excerpts from the play The Harvest by Samuel D. Hunter, then talk with the cast about the process and their performances.
Dance
Commercial Dance Styles
Elements of Jazz, Contemporary, West African, and Hip Hop dance with lyrical and instrumental music. We will create movement combinations for center floor work at the end of the class. This session will also discuss preparation for auditions, agencies, and working professionally in the dance industry. Dancers will understand how to navigate the world through their artistry.
Hip-Hop Dance
Join us for an energetic and immersive Hip Hop Masterclass that dives deep into the culture, history, and technique of one of the most influential music and dance movements in the world. Whether a beginner or a seasoned dancer, this class will challenge your skills and expand your understanding of hip hop’s roots, rhythms, and innovation. Get ready to explore the dynamic world of freestyle, choreography, and expression in a creative, supportive environment.
Jazz Dance
This workshop will focus on body placement, strength, flexibility, coordination, sequencing, rhythm and style elements used in Jazz Technique. Students will learn a short combination.
Rhythm and Groove
Explore the world of rhythmic independence and percussion. Students will learn basic exercises and grooves to improve their understanding of subdividing, complex meters and polyrhythms.
Music
Creating Music Digitally
Students will create their own music using Digital Audio Workstations. DAWs allow users to record, edit, mix, and master audio in professional and home studios. Software functions will be introduced, and students will have a hands-on opportunity to create a loop-based composition with direct support from an Adelphi music professor.
Fun With Ukuleles
In this session you will learn basic chords and leave with the knowledge to play a simple song! Instruments will be provided.
Song Coaching
In this workshop, Broadway and classical singers will receive pointers to refine technique, expand vocal versatility, and strengthen expressive performance. Please have sheet music of your selection ready to share.
Guest Artist
Joe Iconis

Joe Iconis is a musical theater writer and performer from Garden City, New York. He has been nominated for a Tony Award, four Drama Desk Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, and is the recipient of an Ed Kleban Award, a Jonathan Larson Award, and a Richard Rodgers Award.
After originating at Two River Theater in Red Bank NJ, Joe’s musical Be More Chill (with Joe Tracz) went on to play Broadway, London, and Tokyo. His new show The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical has played Signature Theatre in Washington D.C. and the La Jolla Playhouse. Joe is the author of Love in Hate Nation , Broadway Bounty Hunter (with Lance Rubin and Jason SweetTooth Williams), Bloodsong of Love , Punk Rock Girl! (for Lively McCabe), The Black Suits (with Robert Maddock), ReWrite , Things To Ruin, and Theaterworks USA’s The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks and We the People . His music appeared on season two of NBC’s Smash and he frequently performs with his concert act Joe Iconis & Family at 54 Below (where he is their first-ever Artist-in-Residence) and the Laurie Beechman Theater.
His albums include the 44-song retrospective “Album”, the original cast recordings of “Love in Hate Nation”, “Broadway Bounty Hunter”, “Things To Ruin”, and “Be More Chill” (both OCR and OBCR, which have been streamed over 750 million times); “Two-Player Game” (with George Salazar), and “The Joe Iconis Rock & Roll Jamboree” all available on Sh-K-Boom/Ghostlight Records. Joe is hugely inspired by Robert Altman, Dolly Parton, The Muppets, and the Family of artists he frequently surrounds himself with.
A Day with the Arts Student Contract
All students must have a signed A Day with the Arts Student Contract by a parent or legal guardian prior to participating in the event. This form will be provided upon registration.
Registration
All faculty, chaperones and students must have the Adelphi University Camera Release Form signed by a parent or legal guardian. Students who do not have a signed photo release form will not be permitted to participate in the event. Please be sure to share this information with your students and their parents. We request you scan your signed forms and send them to us at infoevents@adelphi.edu prior to the event in order to expedite the check-in process. You may also collect the forms and bring them with you on the day of the event.
