Positive, Problematic and Productive Social Media Use: Breaking Down Barriers and Focusing on Potential for How Young People Engage Online

Adolescent sexuality and relationships are interwoven with cell phones and social media. Many caregivers and professionals are left wondering: what does it all mean? This workshop will start from the ground up, beginning with definitions and a roadmap of technology commonly used by young people. From there, we will examine how technology influences teen sexuality and relationships – for better or for worse. We will discuss teen relationship abuse and technology, as well as the way teen relationships and identity can be strengthened by technology. Finally, the class will focus on how to work with and relate to teens through the lens of technology.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Review social media platforms that are commonly used among adolescents.
• Be able to describe the difference between a tech-negative and tech-positive approach to adolescent social media use.
• Identify positive and problematic adolescent social media use
• Learn strategies for positively engaging with youth through a tech-positive framework.

Faculty Bio

Kaleigh Cornelison, MSW

Kaleigh Cornelison is a trainer, facilitator, and social worker. She supports nonprofits, health centers, and schools through engaging and creative professional development opportunities. Kaleigh specializes in communication, conflict, team building, trauma-informed care, facilitation skills, and youth development. She also works as the Manager of Quality Improvement, Youth Engagement and Resource Development for the Adolescent Health Initiative at Michigan Medicine. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis with a specialization in nonprofit management. She lives in beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan with her wife, rescue pup, Calvin, and baby, Amelia.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
