Intergenerational Trauma in the BIPOC Community and the Use of Art

Overview

Attendees will leave the workshop with an understanding of what intergenerational trauma is, the history of intergenerational trauma in the BIPOC community, how intergenerational trauma, when unresolved, can affect a person in various ways, and how one interacts within their community. The attendees will also learn how to incorporate the use of art to explore their own trauma – what it looks like for them and how to be present with it.

With this workshop, attendees will learn how to assist their clients in the early stages of healing and understand how to facilitate deeper and more robust conversations with clients about their intergenerational trauma, as well as the daily effects of their trauma within their interpersonal Relationships.

This workshop has been designed to explore and educate practitioners on how art can help and assist in providing a safe place for clients to explore their trauma in a creative manner. Social Workers will learn exercises that can be utilized within their sessions.

• Apply how to incorporate art with the healing process.
• Recognize the role art has in addressing trauma.

Speaker Bio

Sharieka Mason, MSW

Sharieka Mason, MSW obtained their Master of Social Work degree in 2016 from Adelphi University. In addition, they hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Molloy College in 2006.

Sharieka has over 5 years of professional experience working as a therapist with a background in case management, preventative services, life coaching, workshop facilitation, and as a parent trainer. As a psychotherapist, I have serviced individuals within the BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ community, Intellectual Disabilities, personality and mood disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, grief and end of life, intergenerational trauma. Additional history includes experience in supervising new hires, providing educational services, and working with various communities both in-person and through telehealth.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
