Generative AI in Action: Enhancing Micro, Mezzo, and Macro Practices in Social Work

Overview

The workshop will engage participants in critical discussions about the ethical implications of using AI in social work, emphasizing the importance of social work ethics such as privacy, confidentiality, awareness of bias, and maintaining human-centered approaches while using generative AI. This will also be an interactive session complete with live demonstrations and hands-on practice, enabling participants to develop the skills necessary to integrate and adopt AI technologies into their everyday social work practices using ChatGPT. All participants will receive a free copy of an 83-page Generative AI Prompt Guidebook tailored for Social Work Practice, designed to aid in the practical application of AI tools in various social work settings. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for social work professionals eager to enhance their practice with innovative AI solutions while adhering to ethical standards and promoting human-centric approaches.

Learning Objectives

• Understand the Foundations: Participants will gain a foundational understanding of generative AI technologies, including how these tools are developed and their potential applications within different levels of social work practice (micro, mezzo, and macro).
• Explore Practical Tools: Attendees will explore and learn how to utilize specific generative AI tools and resources that can enhance client interaction, case management, community organizing, and policy advocacy in social work.
• Ethical Considerations and Implications: Participants will critically assess the ethical implications of using AI in social work, focusing on privacy, bias, and the importance of maintaining human-centered approaches in automated processes.
• Skill Development in AI Integration: Through interactive sessions with live demonstrations and practice, participants will develop skills to integrate AI technologies into their social work practice.

Facilitator Bio

Dr. Marina Badillo-Diaz, LCSW

Dr. Badillo-Diaz is an experienced school administrator and counseling director with a demonstrated history of working in community mental health and in education as asocial worker. Currently, Dr. Badillo-Diaz is a consultant focusing on the training of educators and social workers with MABD Consulting. She is also an adjunct professor and board member of the National School Social Work Association of America. She is also the author of the blog, “The AI Social Worker”, a 21st Century Skills and AI guide for Social Workers. Her areas of interest include 21st-century skills, social-emotional learning programming, school social work practice, education, youth mental health, clinical supervision for social workers, AI Applications, data management, and career development.

1:00 PM – 1:10 PM: Welcome and Introduction (10 minutes)

1:10 PM – 1:30 PM: Understanding Generative AI Technologies (20 minutes)

• Presentation on the basics of generative AI: development, capabilities, and types
• Overview of AI applications in social work (micro, mezzo, and macro levels)

1:30 PM – 1:50 PM: Ethical Considerations in AI Use (20 minutes)

• Discussion on the ethical implications of using AI in social work
• Emphasizing privacy, confidentiality, bias awareness, and human-centered approaches

1:50 PM – 2:20 PM: Interactive Demonstration of ChatGPT & Participant Practice (30minutes)

• Live demonstrations of ChatGPT by facilitator
• Examples of how these can be applied in client interaction, case management, etc.
• Participants practice with prompts (different prompts are also available for different learning levels and social work practice settings)

2:20 PM – 2:40 PM: Participant Discussion (20 minutes)

• Discussion on the use of ChatGPT
• Practice integrating AI into simulated social work scenarios
• Discuss and share practices using these tools

2:40 PM – 2:55 PM: Developing Adoption of AI Skills & Resources (15 minutes)

• Review Adoption of AI
• Discussion of case scenarios of ways to implement AI
• Review resources of AI for social work practice

2:55 PM – 3:00 PM: Closing Remarks and Distribution of Guidebooks (5 minutes)

• Recap of key learnings from the workshop
• Distribution of the 83-page Generative AI Prompt Guidebook
• Thanking participants and concluding the session

Credentialing Information

Adelphi University School of Social Work is an approved provider for continuing education credits for the following:

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
